Essential oils are the aromatic plant compounds, without additives or synthetic oils. They are a potent natural alternative to synthetic fragrance oils that most of the beauty and cosmetic industry uses. At Vine, we use essential oils that have been ethically sourced and tested by gas chromatography to ensure the purity and potency of the oils by New Directions Aromatics.
Essential oils do not last forever. They hold a medium scent profile in most cold process soaps due to using them at skin safe levels. Most consumers are used to intense fragrances in their cosmetics and it may take some getting used to all natural scents.
Fragrance oils are known to be endocrine disruptors. Even the "safest" fragrance oils are still synthetic chemicals formulated in a lab. Make sure you are reading your labels to ensure you are getting essential oils instead of fragrance oils and it's OK to ask your suppliers where they get their products.
At Vine, we believe that Mother Nature provides us much of what we need already without adding in chemical alternatives. Because of this, we use only all natural plant roots, clays, and infused botanicals in olive oil to color our soap. We do not use chemical micas or titanium dioxide which has been known to be possibly carcinogenic to humans as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Some of our colorants include olive oil infused over heat with indigo, alkanet, Himalayan rhubarb, annatto, madder root, manjistha, saffron, and more. We also use clays such as French pink clay, kaolin clay, and activated charcoal. Even household products such as organic turmeric, paprika, cocoa powder, and carrot juice can make beautiful, rich, and rustic colors in cold process soap.
When we say we are a low waste brand, we mean it. We offer discounts for reusing your glass jars and aluminum tins when you repurchase products. Our business cards are plantable cards that grow into daisies. You will never find any plastic in your packaging, and encourage recycling.
We also do not throw away any soap shavings or excess soap ends. Instead, we repurpose our soap ends and shavings into new confetti and terrazzo soaps.
Finally, we have partnered with Eco-Soap Bank - a non-profit that employs women across the global to recycle leftover soap scraps for children in 25 countries. Eco-Soap Bank is a humanitarian and environmental non-profit organization working to save, sanitize, and supply leftover soap from manufacturers for the developing world.
